What is AI literacy?
AI literacy is the ability to work effectively with artificial intelligence — not just knowing what AI is, but being able to use it, evaluate its output, and make sound decisions about when and how to apply it. Based on AISA's research across 1,000+ conversational assessments — validated against Anthropic's 10,000-conversation AI Fluency Index and the U.S. Department of Labor's AI Literacy Framework — AI literacy breaks down into five measurable components.
The five components of AI literacy
Prompting. The ability to communicate clearly with AI — structuring instructions, providing context, and iterating on results.
Critical Thinking. Evaluating AI output for accuracy, recognising hallucinations and bias, and knowing when not to trust the result.
Technical Understanding. Knowing how AI models work at a practical level — tokens, context windows, model differences — enough to make informed choices.
Workflow Integration. Embedding AI into real work processes, decomposing tasks between human and AI, and building repeatable systems.
Safety & Responsibility. Using AI within ethical and practical boundaries — data privacy, downstream impact, and appropriate disclosure.
AI literacy vs AI fluency
AI literacy and AI fluency describe different stages of capability. Literacy means you can use AI competently and deliberately. Fluency means AI is so deeply embedded in how you work that removing it would require rethinking your entire process. We see four stages of AI adoption:
Most professionals today sit between Bystander and Literate. Fewer than 2% reach the fluency threshold.
Why AI literacy matters
AI literacy is becoming a baseline professional skill — like digital literacy was a decade ago. The U.S. Department of Labor published an official AI Literacy Framework in 2025 identifying 25 sub-competencies across 7 delivery principles. Organisations are beginning to assess AI literacy in hiring and workforce development — not as a nice-to-have, but as a core competency.
Anthropic's research across nearly 10,000 real AI conversations found that the gap between effective and ineffective AI users is not knowledge — it's behaviour: how people prompt, how they verify, and how they integrate AI into decisions. The average AI literacy score across AISA's 1,000+ assessments is 52 out of 100 — most professionals have blind spots they can't see without measurement. See the full methodology →

AI literacy test
Not a multiple-choice quiz or AI aptitude test. AISA is a conversational AI literacy test that measures how you actually use AI — across prompt engineering, critical thinking, workflow integration, technical understanding, and safety. From AI unaware to AI literate to AI fluent: find out where you stand.
Free AI literacy certification
Assess your AI literacy and get certified — free. No course required. Your AI literacy certificate comes from a single conversation, not weeks of study. Every score is backed by evidence from what you said, and your certificate is shareable directly to LinkedIn.
AI proficiency test for every professional

AI literacy & certification FAQ
Is this a free AI skills assessment?
Yes. The assessment is completely free. You get your AI literacy score, AI persona, and a certificate at no cost. A detailed deep-dive report is available separately.
How is this different from an AI skills quiz?
Most AI quizzes use multiple choice. AISA is a conversational AI literacy assessment — it adapts to your answers and scores what you actually demonstrate, not what you guess.
Can I add this AI certification to LinkedIn?
Yes. Your AI skills certificate is LinkedIn-verifiable. One click from your results page adds it to your profile — like a LinkedIn AI badge for your credentials.
Is this suitable if I'm not technical?
Absolutely. AISA adapts to your role. AI skills for non-technical professionals is one of our most common use cases — product managers, designers, HR, business leaders.
How does it compare to other AI certification programs?
Unlike AI courses with certificates that take weeks, AISA certifies your existing AI proficiency in one conversation. It measures what you can already do, not what you studied.
How do I get a LinkedIn AI badge?
Take the free AI skills assessment. When you receive your results, click "Add to LinkedIn" to add your AISA AI Skills Certificate to your profile. It works like a LinkedIn AI badge — visible to recruiters and employers who view your profile.
What does AISA measure?
AISA measures your AI literacy across 5 dimensions: Prompting & Communication, Critical Thinking, Technical Understanding, Workflow Integration, and Safety. Each dimension has specific criteria — 11 in total — scored from evidence in your conversation. The result is an AI proficiency score, an AI persona, and a personalised growth plan.
How does AISA compare to free AI courses with certificates?
Most free AI courses with certificates require weeks of study. AISA certifies your existing AI skills in a single 20-minute conversation. It's an assessment, not a course — if you already have AI proficiency, you can prove it today.
The Science Behind AISA
In 2026, Anthropic published the AI Fluency Index — the largest empirical study of AI fluency to date, analysing nearly 10,000 conversations. AISA covers 93% of the behaviours Anthropic identified as markers of AI fluency and goes even deeper with 4 additional dimensions. The U.S. Department of Labor's AI Literacy Framework (TEN 07-25) defines what every worker needs to know about AI — AISA covers 100% of its 25 sub-competencies.Read our analysis: Anthropic's AI Fluency Study & AISA · DOL AI Literacy Framework & AISA
AISA's framework is developed by a team with deep roots in tech, behavioural science, and AI product leadership — the rubric is informed by backgrounds spanning the Metropolitan Police, Harvard, Crowdbotics (Silicon Valley), and the European School of Economics.
